Great Property, but in dire need of renovation

While I haven't been to all of the hotels in Paro, I think I can safely say that the Olathang hotel probably has one of the best properties in all Paro. Situated on top of a wooded hill the hotel has amazing views on the rice fields and the surounding area. The hotel grounds themselved are real pleasure to walk through with beautiful lawns and paths filled with huge pine trees.

However the hotel itself is in dire need of renovation. It was built to house guests to the 1974 coronation and they don't seem to have done any major work on it since then. The rooms are somewhat funky and musty and the public areas of the hotel feel very worn out. It is such a shame since hotel sits on such a great property it could easily surpass Uma and the other top tier hotel if they put a little more resource into hotel.

Agree.. this could easily be the best hotel in Bhutan

Yep, Totally agree with previous review. A short walk around this property, is enough to make you realize how special this property is. Some of the cabins around perimeter have amazing views of the valley and rice fields below. Personally I would tear down the 1970's structure that's there now and rebuild it completely, bigger and better. This could easily be just as good as Uma (the current reigning champ of hotels in Bhutan) if not better.
