Location : Thimphu Rating :

Tashichoedzong is a Buddhist monastery and fortress on the northern edge of the city of Thimpu in Bhutan, on the western bank of the Wang Chu. It has traditionally been the seat of the Dharma Raja and summer capital of the country.

The main structure of the whitewashed building is two-storied with three-storied towers at each of the four corners topped by triple-tiered golden roofs. There is also a large central tower or utse.

Tashichoedzong in WinterThe original Thimphu dzong (the Dho-Ngyen Dzong, or Blue Stone Dzong) was built in 1216 by Lama Gyalwa Lhanangpa where Dechen Phodrang now stands above Thimphu. Soon after, Lama Phajo Drukgom Shigpo, who first brought the Drukpa Kagyu lineage to Bhutan, took it over

Must visit especially during Thimphu Tsechu

With it's simple symmetry, this is one of the more contemporary dzongs in Bhutan. It is also the biggest dzong and still actively used. Best times to visit are during the spring when the peach blossoms are in bloom or during Thimphu when crowds gather in the newly built northern courtyard .

Anyone know who came up with the new lighting scheme for this Dzong? It's stunning and is obviously done by a professional firm.
